Women Training in the Calasanz System

I always told my sisters that they should never tell a man not to hit them “just because they were women.” I always thought my sisters were stronger than that.  Maybe it was because my father berated women’s strength and portrayed them as defenseless weaklings.  I didn’t believe this. Just watching a woman go through the pain of childbirth was enough to change my attitude. I have taught men and women martial arts over past 30 years and have found that women are tough, spiritually, mentally, and yes, physically, if they are trained properly.

There is a video of me training a young college girl many years ago. As I’m attacking her, I notice that she is not aggressive enough. I have to admit that I was a little rough on her because I knew that she had greater potential. What I did from here was to modify my training system to bring women to the point of strength by using an approach different from training men.

I use a lot of Wing Chun principles when training women because it was created by a woman and is based on power that originates from the core…from the center line, which I believe is a women’s power source. What’s great about this training is that an attacker doesn’t expect a woman to fight back in this manner. That’s why I just love to sit back and watch the women I train surprise their male classmates with their strength and skill. They just don’t expect it! You can see a lot of these women on any of my YOUTUBE videos. They are tough and beautiful!

Video as an instructional tool for the Calasanz System

Comment: Why drop your hands every time you kick?

Response: Thank you for your comment.  What you are watching here is a set of drills. Calasanz’s reality based system includes a lot of focus mitt work emphasizing power strikes.  Your observation is correct in that the student leaves himself totally vulnerable.  What you are not seeing is the corrections made by the instructor regarding the student dropping his hands between attacks.  The YouTube video was instructive for the student in watching his form and later correcting it with his instructor’s guidance.

Calasanz Master Thinks He’s a Black Belt, Why Not You Tube?

Calasanz with Tameyoshi Sakamoto

You Tuber:

Truth be known, Calasanz/Shadowind quit the practice of goju at a green belt level, when he figured he didn’t need to learn any more. He still falsely claims to have a black belt in goju. Too bad his ego exceeds his learning capacity. This is not goju, it is calasanz bullshitziu.

Response:

Let’s get a few things straight before we go on any further.  When you speak to “Shadowind,” you are speaking to a variety of staff members who work for Calasanz.  He is too busy teaching and running a successful school. As far as your assessment of his credentials, you are extremely incorrect regarding his rank.  If he were such a “bullshitziu” practitioner as you so disrespectfully call him, his teacher, Tameyoshi Sakamoto, father of Goju Ryu in the Dominican Republic, would have turned his back on him a long time ago.

Note: In a seminar in October 2009 at the Calasanz Dojo in Norwalk, CT, Tameyoshi Sakamoto awarded Calasanz a 5th degree in Goju Ryu Karate.

Respect Goes a Long Way

You Tuber:

You know what? Honestly I am deeply sorry and gracefully apologize about the remark i made. I myself am a beginner training in muay thai. We both speak the same language. The language of martial arts. I realize i was out of line for making a blatant disrespectful remark at someone i know nothing about. I should have known better and again apologize. Train hard. Peace, love, serenity.

Response

Thanks for your comment. Sometimes we get excited and so caught up in the moment that we say things we later regret. No one is immune to this behavior; this has happened under our roof many times. It just proves that we’re human. It takes a gentleman to apologize and you have proven to us that you are a man worthy of respect. We have seen your videos and believe you have a lot of talent and a great roundhouse! The martial arts will help you go a long way in life.

Great Martial Artists Must Have Excellent Control Over Their Body

You Tuber:

better to use a training dummy for those times when you get just a little too close, not real hits, but even brushes or taps can cause doubt in your partner, and an accident can ruin your whole day.

that’s not what I meant. I meant practing fast control shots against a dummies face or neck is safer than doing it to a real person just to show off. if you are going to almost hit something, why not use a dummy?

Response:

Thanks for your comment and we agree that a beginner should initially use a dummy to practice strikes. In this video however, Calasanz is demonstrating his amazing self-control and is not just doing it for the purpose of “showing off.” Developing self-control for a martial artist is essential for many reasons. First, Calasanz trained many fighters who competed in point and semi-contact tournaments. If you have no self-control, you will get disqualified and the fight goes to your opponent. Secondly, a martial artist who lacks self-control in a fight will be judged harshly in a court of law for using “excessive force.” You have to know when to stop and when enough is enough. Lastly, over the years, Calasanz has had a number of people stop by the school to “challenge” either Calasanz or one of his students. His philosophy is to teach the intruder a lesson without beating the daylights out of him…just enough to get his point across. Notice that his partner stands without moving a muscle because of his faith in Calasanz technique and the fact that he’s never hit anyone by accident when demonstrating. Your point is well taken and advisable for people just starting out. An experienced martial artist without self-control however is a scary thing.

Combining Dance & Aerobics Together for Fitness Buffs or Fighters

You Tuber:

Humm? Totally dangerous ballistic movements. What the Hell was that? I can tell you love yourself.

Response

We fail to see the “ballistic” movements that one of the comments was referring to. What you see here is Calasanz Aerobic Isolation System that has been popular with women since the 80’s. This class is taught at Calasanz dojo, as well as various continuing education programs throughout the area, with great success. Interestingly enough, we get a lot of kickboxing, and dance craze aerobic dropouts from other fitness facilities that have suffered injuries and need a saner form of exercise. Our program suits women of all ages and levels of fitness. We have used similar principles of the Calasanz System to train our fighters. It improves coordination, flexibility, power, balance and reaction time. That is why our system is still popular and we have been in business for over 30 years.

Dance, Aerobics, & Fitness Exercises

KISSS (Keep Self-Defense Simple Stupid)

A lot of people talk about self-defense and end up wasting their time and money with classes or styles that teach them endless techniques that they will never remember in a stressful situation. We focus on building strength, power, coordination and grounding. I don’t care how many self-defense techniques you’ve learned. If you’re weak, nothing will work. We emphasize physical fitness and easy to recall techniques. If you’re not physically fit, then you’re better off buying a handgun and learning how to shoot. Even then you need some coordination to hit your target. We’ve been in the business for a long time and don’t need for anyone to tell us that high kicks are not good in self-defense situations. They’re nice for tournaments and demonstrations. So if this young woman in the video has strong high kicks, her lower ones will be even more deadly. We’ve trained male and female police officers and they keep sending referrals to us. Why? Because our system works. Look at the video again. We work on developing reflexes and good counter attacks so you can cope on the streets. Save the 10,000 self-defense moves for people who want to waste their money.

Train Martial Arts with a Purpose

You Tuber:

my best respect to hard well-trained

Response:

Thanks sir for understanding those who train the martial arts with a purpose, they train with a vision for finding another way, but at the same time they do it as a way of life.
