WHAT MAKES THE CALASANZ KARATE AND KUNG-FU SYSTEM SO UNIQUE?

The basic and founding principles of the Calasanz System are extremely straightforward, intuitive and logical, yet, unfortunately, they are almost universally ignored in traditional Martial Arts training. All techniques must have three fundamental components to be effective: power, speed and focus (a technique that misses the target, is easily avoided, or is simply brushed aside clearly isn’t very effective). In order to develop power, speed and focus it is absolutely essential that there be balance, flexibility and strength throughout the entire range of motion. These qualities don’t mysteriously emerge. They must be systematically and carefully developed.

In most traditional schools, the drills and exercises have been passed from teacher to student and have become part of the “tradition”.  The techniques usually require a very advanced degree of training to do well or even partially well.  Unfortunately, doing something partially right is obviously doing it partly wrong. The cumulative stress and damage to joints, tendons and ligaments in this process of “learning” frequently results in long term and /or permanent degenerative injury. This is especially true after adolescence, when the body has stopped growing.

There is another equally dangerous flaw to this type of rote practice. When techniques are done incorrectly they are simply not effective. Blind repetition won’t magically transform this or make them work. Calasanz is continually reminding students that practice does not make perfect. Practice makes habit. Only perfect practice makes perfect.

Eventually, the student may approximate something that looks correct, but in actuality, the problem areas and weaknesses have only become much more subtle and difficult to correct. The end result is that the vast majority of students will never progress beyond a very mediocre level. Sadly, more practice will only compound the problem and just increase the chance of injury.

The Calasanz System was designed, among other things, to address these two fundamental and critical failings in traditional Martial Arts training. As stated above, it is a scientific and systematic approach to Martial Arts training and mastery designed to take virtually anyone to their highest potential as a Martial Artist in the shortest time possible without brutality or injury. This is a very strong statement to make, but it has been continually proven again and again with people of all ages (men and women) and in all ranges of physical condition. It is a direct result of how unique and effective the system is that helps explain why we are currently the largest school in the country and the quality and diversity of our students. Calasanz sums up the success of the school and its acclaimed international reputation in two favorite phrases: “Martial Arts for Everyone and Traditional Concept with a Modern Approach”.

Hopefully, the first is clear from the discussions above. With systematic development and skillful practice virtually anyone can learn the Martial Arts. Many traditional schools feel brutality and/or intimidation is essential to develop the necessary physical and mental qualities and stamina required in the Martial Arts. This is simply not the case. There are many ways to accomplish this – brutality/intimidation being among the least effective. Some schools are run, in the name of discipline, as if they were actually para – military organizations. Again, not only is this unnecessary but ineffective for the vast majority of people. Students from other styles find the supportive atmosphere of mutual respect at the school a very welcome change. Calasanz has found over the years that “change” brought about through fear or intimidation is seldom permanent. Change brought about by cultivating and developing the requisite “inner” qualities, on the other hand, is not only permanent, but has a transforming effect that touches every aspect of an individual’s life.

THE PERFECT FIT (A Home Training Program)

The Perfect Fit was created by martial arts master, fitness teacher and film star, Calasanz. The Perfect Fit operates as a division of Calasanz Karate & Kung-Fu System, Inc. located in Norwalk. Through his experience, Calasanz discovered that martial arts can be intimidating to many people, therefore, they lose interest in learning more about it. The Perfect Fit is personal training program through martial art and is done in the privacy of your own home. This eliminates the feeling of intimidation, yet offers the complete benefits of the martial art.

Calasanz created a well-rounded system of martial art which offers, at the same time, extensive exercise routines which are tailored to the needs of any individual to accomplish a complete work-out and, at the same time, target specific areas in need of exercise.

This type of training is much different from the traditional routines followed in a gym. We do not use equipment except for free weights and, for some people, ankle weights. For those who prefer to use their exercise equipment, we incorporate this into their program. But eventually, most people prefer to learn more and more of the exercises we have to offer because they are incredibly effective and cover more ground than any one machine used in a traditional gym. Our exercise increases flexibility, strength, stamina, and endurance immediately and has proven time and time again to benefit other sports activities

THE PERFECT FIT specializes in personal training for fitness, aerobic isolation, and kickboxing. It is a unique way of getting into shape and has endless benefits. Learn how to work out, sculpt the body and, at the same time, learn self defense. Workout without the use of traditional machines. Learn how to create a strong, beautiful body and maintain it for the rest of your life.

Because martial arts has primarily been a sport popular to men, it was unbecoming for women to have interest in martial arts. The “traditional training” performed in most schools has a tendency to be quite brutal and eventually creates a very masculine image for women to the most feminine body. One of Calasanz’s specialties has been working with women to create a feminine, strong, and fit body which can endure the challenges of the most “traditional martial art.” Exercise varies from men and women to create the appropriate image for each. Men have a tendency to have a more muscular type of form, where women need to have a leaner and longer form.

Through the Perfect Fit you can sculpt your body into the fittest condition possible, achieve your fitness goals, improve current sports activities and learn something new and exciting at the same time.

Calasanz and One-on-One Personal Training: by Calasanz

Over the last four years, I briefly departed from solely teaching on a one-on-one basis and ventured into small group classes. I began teaching martial arts in the early 80’s and built my reputation by training students one-on-one. I am pleased to say that I have decided to go back to my roots and concentrate on One-on-One Personal Training.

For 25 years, I’ve privately trained Wall Street executives, CEOs from major corporations, professional athletes like the Hartford Whalers ice hockey team, tennis star Ivan Lendl, best-selling authors Cathy Cash Spellman and Patty Davis Reagan, as well as Henry Kissinger’s personal bodyguard, and members of the military and law enforcement services.

I have decided to make this change because this is what I enjoy most and it is where I see the most progress with my students. Understanding that private martial arts training can be a costly, I have offered packages over the last 20 years packages for one, two, three, and even four years at a considerable savings for a long term commitment. A package avoids the high cost of private lessons, which can individually run from $95 to $380 per hour.

Many of you have been comfortable purchasing long term packages not only for the savings, but with the knowledge that I have been in business for over 30 years and am not some “fly by night” operation that is going to close its doors and leave you flat.

I am currently offering long-term packages at great prices for those of you interested in embracing the martial arts as a hobby or as something special that you just do for yourself.

If you are interested in working toward the goal of earning your black belt for instance, you can commit to one year with a savings of more than half of what it would cost you in a month-to-month program. If you have already committed to a 3, 6, 9 month or one year program and would like to enroll long-term, you can still take advantage of the discounted program. Just see me and we can easily make an adjustment to your program.

For those of you who decide to take advantage of a package, I’d like to sit down with you and determine your ultimate goal. Would you like to:

Become proficient in Wing Chun?

Train like a fighter?

Box? Spar? Point fight? Kickbox

Lose Weight? Get fit? Try our Physical Arts program?

Many of you want to learn self-defense and how to be more self-confident. This is and has been our specialty for over 30 years. I not only focus on the physical aspect of learning street defense, but also how not to “lose it” in a confrontation. Remember that Ted Bundy killed over 100 young women and was stopped by the one who fought back and got away! It was her description of this monster that finally put him behind bars. Bundy didn’t expect her to fight back…but she did and stunned him with the element of surprise.

My system is designed for the real world, for real people. It is practical enough to teach you the skills you need without brutal training regimes that serve you no purpose. For whatever your goals, I can work out a long-term package for you that will motivate you and save you money at the same time. Just make an appointment with me and we can work out the details. A good example to be aware of If you sign for a package to finish it on 6 months, if you decided to finish on 4 years still you don’t have to pay extra while you have lessons left, which is why a package is designed to be paid in advance, that is the purpose of the commitment and that is why you are saving more than half of the cost.

I Am Just Teaching What I Love

Calasanz has a skill in which he is capable of seeing, judging, and understanding the potential of any student at any moment. I was teaching a guy who had the physique of a Marine; strong, aggressive, young, and intelligent. He looked like the type of person that an agent would promote in the modeling industry. Calasanz was judging his toughness and aggressiveness. Then I thought about the early 80’s, when our name was very strong and everyone had tremendous respect for Calasanz’s system. Calasanz would take a student, like the one previously mentioned, and in three months that pupil could easily fight in a black belt tournament like Kyoko Shin Kai. It is hard for us to talk about the name, but Calasanz deserved the popularity back then and even today. Calasanz has a good work ethic and he is still an instructor who uses his mind and coaches 50-70 students each day with the mitts from 4 a.m. to 11 p.m.

You must understand that most of these students were not competitors, but they could beat anyone with Calasanz as their trainer and this is how the name was created. From 1986 until 2003-2004, at least two students per week from all over from all over the Northeast, including New York City, New Jersey, Boston, Hartford, Connecticut and many other areas came to meet Calasanz.

Calasanz often recruited tough guys from the streets. I trained people known as street fighters, bouncers, and boxers.  Most of these new students would participate in one tournament or two and they never could lose. With every tournament they entered, they performed well and left a message and thus, good promotion for the name Calasanz.  Some of these tournaments were the most difficult in those days including the Kyoko Shin Kai, the New England Open, and the Henry Cho at Madison Square Garden. At one point my students were not training at all but instead they were doing practical training which was sometimes better than sparring. In just two weeks we decided to send 12 of our students to fight in the Olympic trials.  All my guys ended up fighting each other and some of them had to face each other for the gold medal.

At one point there was a school where the toughest fighters were coming from, especially those fighting in the Olympics. Later on these fighters found out that all the fighting and all the winning was due to them having trained with Calasanz.

SKILL – Integrating mind, body and spirit

Calasanz experience in the martial arts has been an important tool for him as an instructor. His study of various forms of fighting arts has taught him how to integrate mind, body and spirit. As an instructor, his goal is to help his students achieve this integration. Many of Calasanz students lead very hectic lifestyles. Whether it is balancing the demands of work, school and family, students are looking for an outlet to release stress. The Calasanz System is designed to help students achieve the inner peace they are seeking. At the beginning stage of training, Calasanz believes that the student must start slowly. The body must become accustomed to a training schedule. The problem with some students is that they are impatient and want instant results. These students will come to class seven days a week and train for over one hour per session. If the student over trains, not only will his body become sore and overtired, but in his mind, he will also become frustrated and discouraged. Students who are training too much can also find themselves suffering from injuries because the body cannot adjust as quickly as the student wants.. Some of them even have been so embarrassed that they never came back.  If students train slowly and increase their training intensity when they are physically able, they are more likely to stick with their training on a long term basis.

The integration of mind, body and spirit does not come with throwing yourself into grueling training sessions, but develops over time as the student patiently makes his way through his chosen martial art.  As a student progresses in his martial arts studies, the movements become more complex.  This requires the student to reach deeper in himself in order to master a new level. Each level requires more patience and more looking into oneself for the strength to reach the next goal.  Over the years, a student develops the martial arts maturity and instead of seeing a kick or punch, they now see a way of life. They become more patient in their work and home environment, they become more confident and they also develop the perseverance to achieve their goals in life. When a student has reached this level, the integration has already started to take place.

Calasanz approach to martial arts training is to let students progress at their own pace.  An instructor who is too aggressive may find that students either get frustrated and fail to make any progress or give up training all together. The Calasanz System is tailored to the particular needs of the student under Calasanz supervision. Students progress to the next level when they are physically and mentally able to do so.

ALL HAPPENING THROUGH EXPERIENCE

The Calasanz System is effective because it is geared to helping students integrate mind, body and spirit.  Calasanz has noticed many students change not only physically but also mentally.  One of the important aspects of the Calasanz System is requiring students to teach.  Teaching not only helps the student develop his skill, but also helps him develop patience and the ability to think on his feet.  This is an important skill of a martial artist because he must be able to react very quickly to variety of situations.

It is very exciting to Calasanz to watch his students improve their martial arts skills. With proper training, students who have trained for a period of three months are performing techniques that are usually executed by professional martial artist. One of Calasanz goals for new students is to teach them how to train their bodies.  This requires students to discipline themselves. Calasanz constantly reminds students that their bodies may want to do one thing while their minds are going in another direction.  Integrating the two requires patience and a commitment by the student .Recently, Calasanz was coaching a student who had been training with him for three months. As he started going through drills with him, Calasanz could not believe how far this student had advanced in his training. The drills required the student to evade certain attacks by moving his body in different directions. Because of the student’s persistence and serious attitude toward training, he was very quick, flexible, and powerful in his movements. This is what the Calasanz System is all about.

Calasanz Physical Arts-Taking You to the Next Level! – by Calasanz

My goal as a martial arts instructor is to see you make progress.  While some measure progress in the martial arts with colored belts, it is really the space between the tests where you make real gains.  This is where the hard work takes place.

Any decent martial arts system begins with the fundamentals and can take you to the level of mastery.  Success as a martial artist however, depends on two things: commitment on your part and a skilled instructor who not only teaches you the art, but also challenges you.

It has long been my philosophy that you can learn thousands of techniques, but if you are not physically fit enough to execute them; they will be of little or no use.  This is why it’s important for a martial arts curriculum to include challenging conditioning exercises in order to propel you to the next level.

Calasanz Physical Arts training begins with conditioning.  I take you in any condition and help increase your physical fitness.  I structure a workout tailored to your needs and push you to become strong and flexible. As my student, I will encourage you to take conditioning seriously because it is an important part of the whole package.  You will be amazed at how only a few exercises produce fantastic results!

Some of you may get upset when I make changes to your training routines.  You come to the dojo with your own agenda but it is my job to push you beyond your comfort zone.  After three decades dedicated to teaching the martial arts, I know which direction to push you into in order to take you to the next level.

I’m going to intentionally mix up the routine you’ve become so comfortable with because I don’t want your training to get stale.  I may ask you to train with someone other than the usual training partner so you will experience working with someone who is totally different than what you are used to.  I may ask you to spend some time on your least favorite technique or require you to learn a difficult form for your next promotion test.

So don’t get upset if one day I walk up to you and turn it all upside down.   My experience tells me that a stale routine stalls your progress. I want to help you build natural power and the only way I can do that is to force you push past whatever is in your way.  Work diligently on what is asked of you.  The belt is merely icing on the cake.  All the work necessary to progress is done long before the date of your test!

Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans and the Martial Arts: A Complete Package – by Calasanz

On Tuesday, October 7, 2008 the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services released new Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans.  The goal is to encourage the American population to add some type of physical activity to their daily routine.

Daily physical exercise is vital for achieving and maintaining a healthy body.  Scientific studies have proven that regular workouts help reduce the risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke, diabetes, cancer, and osteoporosis.  Regular exercise also decreases depression and improves the physical and mental consequences of aging.

For adults, the guidelines recommend any where from two and one half hours a week of moderate intensity aerobic physical activity, or one hour and 15 minutes of vigorous physical activity. It also recommended that adults should incorporate some type of strength training into their workouts.

Training in the martial arts offers adults who would like to meet these federal guidelines a complete package.  A typical martial arts class includes plenty of aerobic activity.  Martial art warm-up routines may include a variety of calisthenics, light jogging around the classroom and jumping jacks.  The class then turns to learning and practicing kicks, blocks and punches in repetition, which is a great way to get the heart pumping.

A martial arts class is also full of opportunities to build up your strength. Classes often include push-ups, sit-ups and light weight lifting.  Bag work, sparring and self-defense practice with a partner helps develop both strength and cardiovascular health and can also be a lot of fun.

Another health benefit to martial arts training is stress relief.  Taking your aggressions out on a kicking pad or punching bag helps you release those emotions. Over time, stress can affect one’s health and cause gastrointestinal problems, acne, weight loss/gain, headaches, insomnia and addictions.  Many martial art instructors incorporate some type of meditation into their classes to help students center the mind and relax.  This means fewer trips to the doctor’s office!

As a martial artist, you will not only meet the federal guidelines for physical activity, but you also learn how to defend yourself.  All it takes is a few martial arts classes a week. What you get at the end of the day is everything that the federal government has recommended to keep adults healthy as well as learning techniques that could one day save your life.  Do you get these results from working out at the local fitness center?

Making Fitness Part of Your Life: By Calasanz

Pick up a newspaper or turn on the local news on any given day and you are liable to hear a report on how Americans are getting fatter.  Government statistics tell us that approximately 60 percent of Americans-127 million people- are overweight.  Many women who enroll in my school tell me that one of their primary goals is to lose weight.  Unfortunately, some expect instant results.  They become discouraged and inpatient if they don’t see immediate weight loss. Some even drop out altogether.

In my 20 plus years of training men, women and children of all shapes and sizes, I have learned that diets just don’t work.  If they did, we wouldn’t have an obesity epidemic.  The diet industry continually makes promises that they can’t deliver and is fleecing the public at the tune of $40 billion dollars a year.  The diet industry doesn’t want to tell you the truth.  And why should they with the kind of money they’re taking out of people’s misery?

The truth is that weight loss is difficult for many people to achieve. Weight loss is a personal struggle, complicated by an individual’s upbringing, eating habits, metabolism, genetics and psychology.  Yo-yo dieting and subjecting the body to strange eating regimes is much more detrimental to one’s physical and mental health than maintaining a steady weight.

I’m not here to sell you the same bill of goods as the diet industry.  What I will do is encourage you to develop a healthy lifestyle and feel better about yourself.  When you train, come with the attitude that you want to move, breathe and stretch.  What is important is that you focus on wellness.

If you want to lose weight, it will take patience, exercise, sensible diet changes and sacrifice.  There is no way around it.  Focus on fitness…moving, breathing, stretching, feeling strong and enjoying the martial arts.
