WHAT MAKES THE CALASANZ KARATE AND KUNG-FU SYSTEM SO UNIQUE?

The basic and founding principles of the Calasanz System are extremely straightforward, intuitive and logical, yet, unfortunately, they are almost universally ignored in traditional Martial Arts training. All techniques must have three fundamental components to be effective: power, speed and focus (a technique that misses the target, is easily avoided, or is simply brushed aside clearly isn’t very effective). In order to develop power, speed and focus it is absolutely essential that there be balance, flexibility and strength throughout the entire range of motion. These qualities don’t mysteriously emerge. They must be systematically and carefully developed.

In most traditional schools, the drills and exercises have been passed from teacher to student and have become part of the “tradition”.  The techniques usually require a very advanced degree of training to do well or even partially well.  Unfortunately, doing something partially right is obviously doing it partly wrong. The cumulative stress and damage to joints, tendons and ligaments in this process of “learning” frequently results in long term and /or permanent degenerative injury. This is especially true after adolescence, when the body has stopped growing.

There is another equally dangerous flaw to this type of rote practice. When techniques are done incorrectly they are simply not effective. Blind repetition won’t magically transform this or make them work. Calasanz is continually reminding students that practice does not make perfect. Practice makes habit. Only perfect practice makes perfect.

Eventually, the student may approximate something that looks correct, but in actuality, the problem areas and weaknesses have only become much more subtle and difficult to correct. The end result is that the vast majority of students will never progress beyond a very mediocre level. Sadly, more practice will only compound the problem and just increase the chance of injury.

The Calasanz System was designed, among other things, to address these two fundamental and critical failings in traditional Martial Arts training. As stated above, it is a scientific and systematic approach to Martial Arts training and mastery designed to take virtually anyone to their highest potential as a Martial Artist in the shortest time possible without brutality or injury. This is a very strong statement to make, but it has been continually proven again and again with people of all ages (men and women) and in all ranges of physical condition. It is a direct result of how unique and effective the system is that helps explain why we are currently the largest school in the country and the quality and diversity of our students. Calasanz sums up the success of the school and its acclaimed international reputation in two favorite phrases: “Martial Arts for Everyone and Traditional Concept with a Modern Approach”.

Hopefully, the first is clear from the discussions above. With systematic development and skillful practice virtually anyone can learn the Martial Arts. Many traditional schools feel brutality and/or intimidation is essential to develop the necessary physical and mental qualities and stamina required in the Martial Arts. This is simply not the case. There are many ways to accomplish this – brutality/intimidation being among the least effective. Some schools are run, in the name of discipline, as if they were actually para – military organizations. Again, not only is this unnecessary but ineffective for the vast majority of people. Students from other styles find the supportive atmosphere of mutual respect at the school a very welcome change. Calasanz has found over the years that “change” brought about through fear or intimidation is seldom permanent. Change brought about by cultivating and developing the requisite “inner” qualities, on the other hand, is not only permanent, but has a transforming effect that touches every aspect of an individual’s life.

WHAT IS NATURAL POWER? by Calasanz

Calasanz was about nine years old when he noticed a man insulting a lady. That man was around 22 years old, tall, and physically fit. Even at a young age, Calasanz defended the lady. If no one intervened, the fight may have ended badly for the man. I trapped this man’s head on a fence covered with barbed wire and I was choking him. I was a strong kid and thankfully for that guy, someone broke up the fight.

I was loved and famous since I was two years old with most of my fame coming from dancing, singing, and working harder than anyone else on the farm. At the age of seven I was milking 20 cows. On top of being so strong, I had high energy and my parents could not control me. One particular fight was against a young man named Alvarado who was insulting my cousin Jose.  Jose was not fighting back, so I jumped to his defense. Alvarado was older and twice my size and normally would have helped defend me did not have to interfere because I was kicking Alvarado so hard that all he could do was try to survive. This fight even became popular among the neighbors and was talked about for quite some time. I kicked like a mule in that fight. What I did to Alvarado back then was karate. I was able to teach my five year old brother how to counter attack. My brother got into a fight one day and applied what I taught him and at one point punched a kid so hard that he was down for almost three minutes. There were some bad kids around; we were the well behaved, educated kids, who did not take abuse from anyone.

Now I can reflect back to when I played softball. I was young, responsible, popular, and I worked at a bank. The bank had a softball league, so they convinced me to play, knowing that as a kid, I was a very good player.  Even though at this point in life, I was dedicated to martial arts and stopped playing other sports like baseball and softball. I decided to play the season and we won the championship. I gained popularity by hitting the ball so hard. All the players would laugh at me when I stepped up to the plate but I always turned those laughs around by getting hit after hit. During one of the games, a teammate and police officer named Brian, who was as big as a football player, and me weighing 120 pounds, both went to catch a fly ball. Second before Brian crashed into me, he screamed and said, “Look who I am crashing into today.” Brian ended up getting the worst of the collision and almost cried.  I was 16 years old and just 120 pounds.

I cannot understand it: by Calasanz

My system was created and modified with the purpose of helping women, often considered the weaker gender, to understand survival. I strongly believe that women consider themselves the weaker sex which it is not true. I would advise any female to read up on wing chun, why the style was created, and what the creator was capable of understanding. Women can carry a baby for nine months and man cannot; if that is not the definition of strength, I do not know what is. Strength or even the flipside of people considering themselves weak is not just related to women but applies to anyone who should ever happen to be in a situation when life or death are the only two outcomes.

I would love it if my life would have been a little more simpler, I spend time watching crime dramas and I cannot understand why someone can just let other person hurt them. I really believe that people should avoid being hurt or even killed in cold blood, or they should avoid being injured or murdered because they either get scared or refuse to take action to prevent it. I told my sister, “Die fighting.” Never let a man cause you harm because you are a woman, fight back, don’t let anyone hurt you, yes still you can be smart and not over do it. Understand that anyone is vulnerable when they believe that the person will not fight back.

I cannot comprehend how 85 people can die by watching somebody shooting at them and the men just decided to jump in the river to escape by swimming for their lives. How could something like this happen? 85 people dead at the hand of one individual, something is wrong with those that chose to run away. Why couldn’t five or 10 guys risk their lives and rush this guy? They could have overtaken this man and ended it early with not as many casualties. I am completely angry that something like this actually happened.

Survival is something we should all know, it should be a human instinct so fight back when we are in danger of any kind. Women, children, or anyone, do not let things like that happen, fight back, don’t let someone come and bully you or make you a victim. Again, look for the right moment, don’t rush but don’t die without a fight, make your life mean something. Life is too beautiful, planet Earth is too beautiful, stay here as long as you can.

Calasanz and One-on-One Personal Training: by Calasanz

Over the last four years, I briefly departed from solely teaching on a one-on-one basis and ventured into small group classes. I began teaching martial arts in the early 80’s and built my reputation by training students one-on-one. I am pleased to say that I have decided to go back to my roots and concentrate on One-on-One Personal Training.

A Conversation about Basic Hard Striking Techniques

Below is a online conversation between Calasanz and two students discussing the YouTube video “BASIC HARD STRIKING TECHNIQUES” (shown above). The video clip shows Calasanz demonstrating how to effectively block a strong right hand from an opponent and counterpunch off that block with a powerful right hand of your own.

Calasanz: Dariusz, my experience with this is much better now, I have matured more, and now I can do this even faster. One day you should pass by and I will give you a demonstration of this video. You will love it. Even if you are in Norwalk one day, just come and say “hi” and I will talk to you for five minutes. It will be enough to improve your defense on the street. And don’t forget, if you are ever in trouble on the street, try to win the fight without fighting and that makes you not just a better person, but above all, a more skillful individual in the martial arts.

I Am Just Teaching What I Love

Calasanz has a skill in which he is capable of seeing, judging, and understanding the potential of any student at any moment. I was teaching a guy who had the physique of a Marine; strong, aggressive, young, and intelligent. He looked like the type of person that an agent would promote in the modeling industry. Calasanz was judging his toughness and aggressiveness. Then I thought about the early 80’s, when our name was very strong and everyone had tremendous respect for Calasanz’s system. Calasanz would take a student, like the one previously mentioned, and in three months that pupil could easily fight in a black belt tournament like Kyoko Shin Kai. It is hard for us to talk about the name, but Calasanz deserved the popularity back then and even today. Calasanz has a good work ethic and he is still an instructor who uses his mind and coaches 50-70 students each day with the mitts from 4 a.m. to 11 p.m.

You must understand that most of these students were not competitors, but they could beat anyone with Calasanz as their trainer and this is how the name was created. From 1986 until 2003-2004, at least two students per week from all over from all over the Northeast, including New York City, New Jersey, Boston, Hartford, Connecticut and many other areas came to meet Calasanz.

Calasanz often recruited tough guys from the streets. I trained people known as street fighters, bouncers, and boxers.  Most of these new students would participate in one tournament or two and they never could lose. With every tournament they entered, they performed well and left a message and thus, good promotion for the name Calasanz.  Some of these tournaments were the most difficult in those days including the Kyoko Shin Kai, the New England Open, and the Henry Cho at Madison Square Garden. At one point my students were not training at all but instead they were doing practical training which was sometimes better than sparring. In just two weeks we decided to send 12 of our students to fight in the Olympic trials.  All my guys ended up fighting each other and some of them had to face each other for the gold medal. 

At one point there was a school where the toughest fighters were coming from, especially those fighting in the Olympics. Later on these fighters found out that all the fighting and all the winning was due to them having trained with Calasanz.

The Calasanz System is effective because it is geared to helping students integrate mind, body and spirit.  Calasanz has noticed many students change not only physically but also mentally.  One of the important aspects of the Calasanz System is requiring students to teach.  Teaching not only helps the student develop his skill, but also helps him develop patience and the ability to think on his feet.  This is an important skill of a martial artist because he must be able to react very quickly to variety of situations.

It is very exciting to Calasanz to watch his students improve their martial arts skills. With proper training, students who have trained for a period of three months are performing techniques that are usually executed by professional martial artist. One of Calasanz goals for new students is to teach them how to train their bodies.  This requires students to discipline themselves. Calasanz constantly reminds students that their bodies may want to do one thing while their minds are going in another direction.  Integrating the two requires patience and a commitment by the student .Recently, Calasanz was coaching a student who had been training with him for three months. As he started going through drills with him, Calasanz could not believe how far this student had advanced in his training. The drills required the student to evade certain attacks by moving his body in different directions. Because of the student’s persistence and serious attitude toward training, he was very quick, flexible, and powerful in his movements. This is what the Calasanz System is all about.

MMA: A Balanced Approach – by Calasanz

Martial Arts originated out of necessity.  People had to defend themselves against humans and animals and the only weapons they had were their hands and feet. The battles fought by these individuals were for sheer survival, not belts or plastic tournament trophies.  When confronting life and death struggles, the ancient warrior had to condition his body to take the brutal physical punishment his opponents dished out.  He also had to skillfully maneuver in battle to minimize the physical damage to himself. 

Martial Arts eventually came to the West and were taught by instructors trained under the “old school” system-toughen the body by exposing it to a brutal training which included lots of beatings during sparring.  I personally witnessed this at the age of 14 when I took my first Karate class in the Dominican Republic.  Students, regardless of rank, were pummeled mercilessly with no training on how to block or simply get out of the way of a ferocious attack.  Don’t get me wrong, these fighters were tough and could take a blow but at what cost?

There is brutality in many sports, especially combat sports.  We’ve seen injuries, deaths, and the long-term effects of abuse on the body in Football, Boxing, Hockey, and Karate.  And while at the professional levels in any sport, the competition is so good that it is impossible to avoid brutality, I must say I am very impressed with many of the fighters in the UFC! 

The physical training they put themselves through allows them to take strikes that would kill an average man.  As impressed as I am with the physical, mental, and spiritual preparation it takes to step into the Octagon, I am astounded at their skills in avoiding brutality.  How is it that in over 18 years of MMA that none of these fighters have gotten seriously hurt or killed?  It is because these fighters can move, avoid, slip, and escape; they have tremendous timing and blocking abilities. 

The MMA fighters have brought Martial Arts training into balance. They are not only strong and conditioned athletes, but also admirable technicians skilled in the fighting arts. This is the essence of martial arts.  This is what separates a martial artist from a street brawler.

So if you wish to be a fighter, build your body to the maximum, because it is inevitable that you will get hit and you need to be able to take it.  But don’t rely on your body (or face) to absorb all the abuse.  Avoid kicks and punches to the head at all costs; block, move, slip, evade, fight intelligently!  This will keep you in the sport longer, and you won’t end up like Muhammad Ali when you retire!

Fighting for Your Life! – By Calasanz

Get into a good martial arts school that teaches you how to survive! Don’t spend years learning useless forms or how to use weapons that were popular in ancient societies. Who carries around a staff or sword in the real world?  Find a school with a curriculum that emphasizes overall fitness, self-defense and survival!   

Most martial artists will tell you that your chances of surviving abduction once an attacker gets you into his car are slim to none.  Their advice is to fight for your life because statistics show that the consequences are grim.  On Wednesday, July 28, 2004, Larissa del Mar Fiallo, Miss Dominican Republic, was assaulted by two men who tried to kidnap her in the parking lot of a shopping mall. 

What is interesting us about this story reported by CNN.com (July 29, 2004) is that Ms. Fiallo was able to escape her attackers because of her judo training.  She explained how she fought back when the two men tried to get her into their car and how she knocked over the larger one three times.  Her attackers eventually left the scene. While Ms. Fiallo suffered deep cuts and bruises to various parts of her body, she survived the attack and was released from the hospital several days later.

Most people are concerned with their safety in an increasingly uncertain world.  They want to be prepared to defend themselves and their loved ones.  Ms. Fiallo’s years of judo training paid off.  Are you ready to fight for your life?
