PHYSICAL ARTS – AN EVOLUTION OF MARTIAL ARTS (Part 1): by CALASANZ

CALASANZ PHYSICAL ARTS® evolved out of the martial arts tradition. It is the fastest way to get into shape and learn self-defense. Our system grew out of two programs I established to accommodate students who asked for special training. The first program was primarily used to improve athletic performance, called the YOUNG ATHLETES. Parents who trained with me or heard about my school asked if I could do something to improve their children’s athletic performance. I took the best the martial arts had to offer and combined them in a training system to maximize athletic conditioning and skill in a relatively short time. I worked with athletes specializing in tennis, soccer, football, basketball, ice hockey, dance, gymnastics and baseball to get fast results.

Another component of CALASANZ PHYSICAL ARTS® is the self-defense piece. This came out of a request from law enforcement officers; fire fighters and military personnel who wanted to get into shape and learn hardcore self-defense without having to spend years studying a traditional martial art. These people had no time for belts or tournaments. They had to worry about survival. I devised a one-month intensive to accomplish these goals.

Both programs were so successful that I decided to combine them into one program for the benefit of the general public. CALASANZ PHYSICAL ARTS® is popular because of its ability to get quick results and to keep you interested in your training. In creating this system, I designed a collection of exercises and techniques that focus on developing power, grounding, balance, endurance and flexibility.

There are so many different exercises in the system that boredom is impossible! I have created many variations on the basic exercises…from moving in different directions to working out in a seated or standing position. I love to change up the exercises from time to time to keep your workout fresh and to keep your muscles guessing.

CALASANZ PHYSICAL ARTS® is a great alternative to working out at a gym on machines, free weights or with a personal trainer. It’s a system that gets you into shape, teaches you how to defend yourself and keeps your workout fresh and exciting.

Are you an individual that wants to become more competitive in athletics? by Calasanz

Are you trying to make the travel team instead of the rec. team? Possibly, you’re trying to be selected to the Varsity team instead of the J. V. team. College hockey may be your dream or maybe you just want to beat the Canadians when your team competes in Canada.

My system of training and exercise creates total body conditioning for any sport. It is a unique and simplistic system anyone can learn. We start with flexibility, stretching, and light weight exercises. We improve all athletic skills by teaching fully coordinated body movements. We teach an individual how to train aggressively yet intelligently. After the fundamentals are understood, we make your techniques sport specific for hockey.

The benefits of my system yields explosive leg power, improves stride length, and increases leg speed…as forearm and shoulder strength improves, as you will stick handling, soft hands, and wrist shot techniques improve. My system of hip movements will enhance your checking, slap shot, and taking skills. We will increase your hip flexion and hip extension strength. With years of training in my system, your peripheral vision will improve dramatically. Your foot speed, hand speed, concentration, and hand-eye coordination will all get noticeably better. We even teach breathing techniques to help you relax between shifts. The balance techniques we teach are unique to our system and are very, very effective

We utilize different exercises for male and female athletes. Our techniques for women maintain femininity yet increase strength and endurance beyond comparison. We incorporate plyometric exercises to improve and complement speed techniques. We work hard to build a strong foundation, so that when you begin lifting heavier weights to excel in Midget, Junior, or College hockey, you have developed total body strength and excellent flexibility, through our system of training.

We give you the mental strength to accept challenges you normally wouldn’t accept. We develop the physical strengths and confidence to accomplish those challenges. We use positive motivation techniques to help individuals achieve their desired results.

SKILL – Integrating mind, body and spirit

Calasanz experience in the martial arts has been an important tool for him as an instructor. His study of various forms of fighting arts has taught him how to integrate mind, body and spirit. As an instructor, his goal is to help his students achieve this integration. Many of Calasanz students lead very hectic lifestyles. Whether it is balancing the demands of work, school and family, students are looking for an outlet to release stress. The Calasanz System is designed to help students achieve the inner peace they are seeking. At the beginning stage of training, Calasanz believes that the student must start slowly. The body must become accustomed to a training schedule. The problem with some students is that they are impatient and want instant results. These students will come to class seven days a week and train for over one hour per session. If the student over trains, not only will his body become sore and overtired, but in his mind, he will also become frustrated and discouraged. Students who are training too much can also find themselves suffering from injuries because the body cannot adjust as quickly as the student wants.. Some of them even have been so embarrassed that they never came back.  If students train slowly and increase their training intensity when they are physically able, they are more likely to stick with their training on a long term basis.

The integration of mind, body and spirit does not come with throwing yourself into grueling training sessions, but develops over time as the student patiently makes his way through his chosen martial art.  As a student progresses in his martial arts studies, the movements become more complex.  This requires the student to reach deeper in himself in order to master a new level. Each level requires more patience and more looking into oneself for the strength to reach the next goal.  Over the years, a student develops the martial arts maturity and instead of seeing a kick or punch, they now see a way of life. They become more patient in their work and home environment, they become more confident and they also develop the perseverance to achieve their goals in life. When a student has reached this level, the integration has already started to take place.

Calasanz approach to martial arts training is to let students progress at their own pace.  An instructor who is too aggressive may find that students either get frustrated and fail to make any progress or give up training all together. The Calasanz System is tailored to the particular needs of the student under Calasanz supervision. Students progress to the next level when they are physically and mentally able to do so.

Training the Beginner: A Lifetime of Lessons – Calasanz Extended Biography

Continued from: “Teaching the Calasanz System – Part Three: A Lifetime of Lessons – Calasanz Extended Biography”

I tell my beginning students to stop focusing on how they look and concentrate on how they feel.  Do they have more energy?  So they have more confidence?  This is what is important.  If you stick with something long enough, you will eventually see the physical results.  But within a few months, you start to feel more secure in that you’ve learned something about defending yourself.

Our first job with beginners is to work on their coordination.  New students sometimes come to this school with misconceptions about martial arts training and their own abilities.  For example, I have had many new students who have only worked out on machines.  Some of them have a hard time making this transition, especially when they have to rely on their bodies to do the work.  I had one woman who enrolled in the school after having spent several years working with machines.  She told me that she wanted to take the traditional approach to studying the martial arts.  It took me many months to work on her coordination.  She was studying for her green belt and had to break a board.  She was nervous about this so I arranged for a black belt instructor to help her get ready for the break.  Her training required that her instructor to swing at her, she would evade it and then strike the pad with her shin.  The next day she came into my office and complained that she had a tiny bruise on her shin.  She was very angry and I was even more upset that we were having this conversation.  A tiny bruise is inconsequential to what she had learned.  I told her that a tiny bruise is nothing in comparison to what she learned here at the school.  I reminded her of all I went through just to teach her the basics.  She was now coordinated and able to train on her own without equipment.  She didn’t want to hear it.  She left in the middle of class and didn’t return.

We’ve had many students who have trained here because they couldn’t train anywhere else. We had the patience to work with them and help them develop skills that they never thought they would have.  Once they learn how to control their bodies, they go off to other martial arts schools or take up dancing, yoga or some other type of physical activity.  Now we have trained them to adapt to any physical activity.  We get a lot of students who end up coming back because of the amount of attention we pay to their training.  When they return, they find they have forgotten what they worked so hard to attain.  Some of them don’t understand that it is the skill of the instructor and their commitment that can help them maintain a healthy body for the rest of their lives.

Martial Arts American Style – Part Three: A Lifetime of Lessons – Calasanz Extended Biography

Continued from : Martial Arts American Style – Part two: A Lifetime of Lessons – Calasanz Extended Biography

I also enrolled as a student at a martial arts school in Darien where I experienced one of the biggest challenges of my career.  One of my more experienced classmates kicked me.  As a got ready to challenge him in a sparring match, someone stopped the fight.  Even though I was considered to be a very powerful fighter, I saw this incident as a big wake up call.  I was determined to get even.  I started an intense training regime.  I did up to 10,000 kicks per day, sometimes training for hours.  All the rigorous mental and physical training, as well as the counter attack skills I developed with one punch and side kick, were my reward from this incident.  This man and I never fought again. He and I became good friends and I won his respect by improving myself. This is what I mean by winning without fighting.

Something similar happened in the Dominican Republic.  My classmate, Alejandro kicked me with a hard spinning kick.  My teacher stopped the fight because he knew I would retaliate.  Alejandro was getting ready for a tournament, so he was using me as a practice target.  The next time we fought, I was determined to give him a run for his money.  I hit him so hard that he started bleeding from his ears, eyes and mouth.  My teacher was furious and almost threw me out of the school.  I later spoke to Alejandro and explained to him that while he had to get ready for a tournament by trying to kill me, I had to get ready for him.  My teacher never did kick me out of the school because aside from my determination not to lose a fight, I was a helpful, devoted student.

I wanted to look good in the execution of my martial art techniques, so I was willing to “humiliate” myself as a man and study dance.  The humiliation turned to fun when I found myself in a class of twenty women!!  I studied ballet, jazz, and tap.  Dance training paid off because it taught me poise and self-expression.  I have incorporated many of the stretching and training techniques I learned there into my martial arts classes.  To this day, new students will often ask my more senior students if they ever studied dance.  I tease my students, especially the men, by telling them, “Do you know you’re learning dance techniques without having to take dance lessons!  You don’t have to do a pirouette in front of twenty women.  I did it for you!”

The Benefits of Calasanz Physical Arts Training.

Within one year of coming to this country, I established a successful martial art business. I created a system of exercises primarily for women called Calasanz Physical Arts. This system includes exercises from various martial art and fitness disciplines including dancing, and gymnastics. My reason for creating Calasanz Physical Arts was to help women create a strong foundation upon which to build their martial art skills. When I was young I weighed and realized that I had to develop my martial art skills and improve my fitness level in order to compensate for being a lightweight fighter. I was able to defeat my teacher, Rafael Martinez, a heavyweight boxer and black belt using the same principles that are now part of Calasanz Physical Arts curriculum.  I learned that being strong was a prerequisite for being a good fighter and out of this experience, created a successful for women and men as well.

Calasanz Pau Fa Yoga™

Calasanz Pau Fa Yoga™ is a physical fitness program combining martial arts applications, known as bunkai, with the style, grace, and fluidity of yogic stretching techniques and the serenity of meditation.

Calasanz Pau Fa Yoga™ program consists of “no contact” routines where you learn how to maneuver in a defensive manner. The added benefit of Calasanz Pau Fa Yoga™ is that you learn self-defense as you gain a deeper appreciation of the applications or bunkai. You will be constantly challenged with new, and exciting movements selected from the katas of karate, kung fu, wing chun and Chinese boxing, as well as the Calasanz System™.

Calasanz Pau Fa Yoga™ also cultivates the principles of yogic meditation and concentration by encouraging participants to empty their minds and confront their imaginary opponents with slow, deliberate, and invigorating movements. The word Yoga is derived from the Sanskrit root word yuj that means union, or balance. With this concept in mind, Calasanz main objective in creating Calasanz Pau Fa Yoga™ was to unite the principles of martial arts and yoga to create a dynamic physical fitness program that has long been a favorite of his private and group fitness clientele. The end result of Calasanz Pau Fa Yoga™ is balance…a physical workout, a mental release, and an understanding and working knowledge of the practical application of martial arts techniques.

The Calasanz System’s approach is designed for everyone.

The Calasanz martial arts and physical arts system are old traditional techniques with a modern Calasanz System approach that are designed for everyone. During the late 80s the Calasanz workout was insane and intense, but also some of the smartest and incredible training ever seen. It would behoove anyone to at least take a look what Calasanz was doing back then which still up to today he continues to evolve. This clip pictures Calasanz archive workouts…check it out.

Joel S. is a 56 year old student performing the Kata Jujitsu with Calasanz. It is very easy to identify the Calasanz System’s interpretation in this Kata – all movements and techniques are performed beautifully, with great strength, rhythm, balance, power.

Calasanz makes students re-think about their lives. Training with Calasanz helps change peoples’ realization of life. As Calasanz likes to say: “I teach people to appreciate themselves again.” Sometimes he will come across a woman, who looks older than her age and or has a problem with weight, and just is unhappy with herself. Calasanz believes with his system he can add at least 10 years to her life, he believes this because he has already done it with so many people. Everyone who has trained with Calasanz gains power, elegance, and grace whether you are a man, women, or child. Come experience it for yourself. The Calasanz system is well balanced system for all, which offers a diversity of exercises so it always maintains your interest.
